4 Tips to Create a Dream Closet on a Budget

I’m sure like most of you, your dream closet involves chandeliers, shelves full of Hermès Birkin purses and Louis Vuitton shoes. The reality is that most of us don't have the real estate space or the extra funds for such an elaborate plan. So here are some quick tips for a “Dream” closet with a budget.

Purge- Donate everything you don't use anymore. Even those pants that you swear you will fit into next year. If you aren't currently wearing it, get it out!  If its a seasonal item, is there another place you can store it? Get creative, you will need to measure the space. After you purge, make sure you take an inventory of what you have. For example, if they have 50 pairs of shoes, a 25 cubby shoe holder isn't going to work.

Ready, set, shelve- There are two ways to add shelving to your closet: 1) go to your local home improvement store and choose a kit, or 2) DIY and custom pick each piece that goes into your home. Just remember a couple of things

  1. What are the measurements of my closet? Before buying any kit or single items you need to be confident in the amount of space you have. 

  2. Do I have moisture in this closet? If so, choose a wired system

  3. How much weight will be placed on this shelf? You might think that a pair of shoes is not very heavy but when you have multiple shoes on one shelf, it is important that the shelves will be able to hold the weight of all that. 

  4. What is my style? Don't just add one style of shelving, add pull out drawers, put doors on a shelf or maybe get some tower or corner units. 

Organize- There are so many ways to customize and organize your closet. There are:

  1. Jewelry Drawer Dividers

  2. Hampers and Baskets

  3. Poles and Racks 

  4. Shoe Storage

  5. Shelf and Drawer Dividers

  6. Pull-down rod (help maximize vertical space)

Customize- Every day you go into this room that holds all of your treasures, so personalize to fit your style. 

  1. Add a comfy chair

  2. Add wallpaper

  3. Add LED lights under each shelf
